Chinese Flowering Dogwood - Scarlet Fire®

A stunning newer selection of Chinese Flowering Dogwood which boasts probably the darkest pink bracts so far! Very prolific, medium-to-large pointed bracts (flowers) appear in late spring and can last up to 8 weeks. Fall brings medium sized red strawberry like fruit. Dark green foliage with purple tinges on the new growth turns red and orange in the fall. Vigorous, grows 20′ – 25′ high by 15′ – 20′ wide.

Origin

Seedling of a Cornus kousa 'K187-44' (unreleased which resulted from Cornus kousa'Satomi' and C. kousa 'Benifuji') and an unknown pollen parent. Introduced by Rutgers University in 2017.

Special Notes

Exposure: Full Sun to Part Sun.

Soil: Well workable, moist but well draining slightly acidic soil. Dislikes heavy clay soils.

Maintenance: Selective pruning as needed, can be done in the spring right after the flowers finish. Do not trim summer or afterwards as, you will be removing next springs flower buds.
